The City has installed the High-water Alert Lifesaving Technology (HALT) System at the Rolling Acres Trail Low Water Crossing over Post Oak Creek. This system enhances public safety by warning drivers during flood events and preventing travel through dangerous areas.
What is the HALT System?
The HALT System warns drivers when floodwaters make it unsafe to cross the road. It uses flashing beacons, gates, water level sensors, and advanced technology to provide real-time alerts. The system protects both drivers and emergency personnel by discouraging vehicles from entering flooded areas.
How It Works
Water Level Detection: When water rises to a dangerous depth, the system activates an audible alarm and flashing lights. After a few seconds, the gates automatically close to prevent traffic from crossing.
Vehicle Detection: If a vehicle is in the crossing area, the system delays gate closure until the vehicle clears.
Trapped Vehicles: If a vehicle becomes trapped between the gates, the system will briefly open to allow a slow, safe exit. If it is unsafe to move forward, drivers should slowly back up to the closed gate behind them, which will momentarily open for safe reversal.
Safety Measures
The gates are designed to close automatically. City staff or First Responders must manually reopen the gates after verifying that the area is clear of debris and safe for travel. This ensures the road is only reopened when it is safe for motorists.
