"Purple Heart City" Sign Unveiling
On January 20th, the City of Fair Oaks Ranch unveiled brand new “Purple Heart City” Street Signs at key entrances to “the Ranch.” The signs were unveiled in a morning ceremony outside of City Hall on January 20, 2023. The ceremony was attended by dozens of local veterans and Purple Heart recipients including members representing the Alamo Chapter 1836 Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Post 313, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 688. Residents, current and former elected officials and representatives from the City of Fair Oaks Ranch, Kendall County, Bexar County, Boerne ISD, and the Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Department were also in attendance.
The Ceremony was kicked off at 10AM by current Mayor of Fair Oaks Ranch Greg Maxton. While recognizing the veterans in attendance Mayor Maxton remarked, “This is a special day for us. The Purple Heart Award is the oldest commendation in the U.S Military and receiving (this) honor is a prestigious moment for (our) City.” Mayor Maxton also acknowledged former Mayor Garry Manitzas and former Mayor Cheryl Landman-Manzo, who was instrumental in the City’s designation as a Purple Heart City in 2016.
Mayor Pro Tem Laura Koerner unveiled the new sign to the public along with Commander Porfirio “Tony” Quesada of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Koerner detailed the background of the Purple Heart Medal and the City’s designation as a Purple Heart City. She recognized and thanked the awardees of the medal and veterans in attendance. Councilmember Koerner continued, “One of the many things I love about Fair Oaks Ranch is the number of veterans we have in our community and the amazing contributions they make to our society in all the different volunteer activities they do because they continue to serve.” She ended her remarks with a heartfelt thank you, saying, “Thank you to everyone for your service. I hope as we drive on the roads of Fair Oaks Ranch, and as you enter our City and see this sign, it makes you take a pause and remember everyone who served and to be grateful that we have such wonderful residents in our City that have served our nation.”
Commander Quesada remarked, “A few years ago, we were right here when the City became a Purple Heart City. We really were proud of that event and very appreciative of the invitation that we have received to be a part of this today. Thank you so much for the support.”
The new “Purple Heart City” Street Signage was officially unveiled at approximately 10:15 AM by Mayor Pro Tem Koerner and Commander Quesada of the Alamo Chapter 1836 Military Order of the Purple Heart.
The City of Fair Oaks Ranch is extremely proud of its designation as a Purple Heart City. As a member of the Purple Heart Trail, we hope the new signage honors all recipients of the Purple Heart and veterans, and reminds all those traveling through our City of the service and sacrifice of these brave men and women.
